Forensic Reverse Engineering

Forensic Reverse Engineering Forensic Reverse Engineering Engineers can often recount a story from their youth about taking aparte a clock, a small engine, or some gadget, to figure out how it works and to try to put it back together again. Now those same engineers can trace over existing parts and assemblieswhether small or largeand input those shapes into a CAD system, perhaps in the hopes of coming up with a competing design. In both cases the reverse engineering is done to find out how a product works.Colin Gagg, though, uses reverse engineering to discover how a product doesnt work. An associate lecturer in forensic engineering at the Open University in Milton Keynes, England, Gagg makes his livelihood by understanding how and why products fail.To recognize how a component or system failed, the engineer must understand how it worked and was manufactured in the first place, Gagg said. By stepping back through the transformation stages, hell be in a better ort to determine the mos t probable or expected points of failure within a component or system. An archetypal example comes from his book, Forensic Materials Engineering Case Studies, co-authored, with Peter Rhys Lewis and Ken Reynolds. This case began when a dock worker noticed a split in the end panel of a loaded 33-foot-long container being lifted from a ship. The container showed no other obvious signs of external damage, and the piece of machinery it held was still anchored inside.Shortly after that first split was found, workers at other ports noticed similar failures in the same type of freight container. Costs quickly escalated. Machines had to be loaded into other containers, empty containers needed to be shipped to those ports, and the damaged containers had to be either disposed of or repaired.Investigators found that all the containers had been made at the same factory during a two-month period. On each one, the riveted seam between the two end panels in the side of the container had split open f rom bottom to top. All the containers had split in the same way, and all had been carrying heavy machinery rather than bulky loads evenly distributed throughout their length.A mechanical engineer found nothing wrong with the original design or with the construction of the containers.Forensic reverse engineers were called in to track each part and how it had been manufactured. They determined that the containers side panels were sheets of aluminum alloy, riveted to each other and to the frame along vertical lap joints. All the failures involved the unzipping of the vertical lap joint between the first and second sheets from the end of the container. As the aluminum sheets were deemed innocent, their focus turned to the rivets. Although microscopic examination found no internal fault, wear, or corrosion, investigators found that if one rivet near the end of a seam failed, it would throw the extra load onto its neighbors, which could overstress them, causing all the rivets to unzip. Aft er looking at the specification for the rivets on the engineering drawing, they performed a hardness test on the failed rivets. They were well below the strength indicated on the drawing.A mechanical engineer then found that a batch of containers was produced with rivets that had been set without being first solution treated, as specified on the drawing. It was subsequently discovered that a single employee at the container factory had omitted the solution heat treatment. Case solved. Its my view that a good forensic engineer will glean relevant information through meticulous investigation and by taking a reverse-engineering approach, Gagg said. The same could be said of engineers charged with creating a parts in the first place. Any engineer should be aiming to train himself to become a failure detective, Gagg said.Adapted from Working Backward, by Jean Thilmany, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, June 2005.Shortly after that first split was found, workers at other ports notic ed similar failures in the same type of freight container. Costs quickly escalated.

How long does it take to regain a spark and motivation

How long does it take to regain a spark and motivationHow long does it take to regain a spark and motivationIf you start doing small daily activities (aka habits) that inch you toward your goal and fuel your motivation? About 66 days.Three Ways toChangeThere are only three to four known ways to modify human behavior for good. You can wait forenlightenment, and this is one way. However, its highly unreliable. You canleid engineer enlightenment.Aelendher method is tochange your environment, what surrounds you. You can throw out every piece of furniture from your bedroom. You can change jobs. You can move to a different city or country. Each of those changes will introduce changes in your environment, and your environment often provides cues for your habits.Follow Ladders on FlipmotherboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThus, your habits will change. But this kind of change lacks the element of conscious de sign. Some of your habits will disappear, others will emerge and you will start behaving differently. How differently? Time will tell. There is one more problem with this method not everyone can afford it. Its not so easy to change a job on a whim or move to another country, especially if you have family and life obligations. When I decided to change my life at the age of 33, I had a day job, was married, had three kids and a 35-year mortgage to pay off. I could not drop everything and start a new life. The ThirdWayAnother great way to change your behavior is tospend time with people you want to be like. Find people who have the spark and motivation. Mingle with them. Interact with them. Thats all. Human social nature will take care of the rest.We are social mimicking machines. Everything, from body language and vocabulary to value systems, transfers from one person to another at a subconscious level. You can slow down or accelerate this process of osmosis only with your conscious effo rt.The Fourth and BestWayMeeting new people may not be an immediate option for everyone. I was shy like hell when I began to change my life. Others may be constricted by geography, physical disabilities or circumstances (its pretty hard for an ex-convict to get into the top tier of society right after getting out of jail).Hence, the most reliable and available method to change ones behavior is bychanging personal habits. The idea of habit does not include the size of the activity. Doing a pushup once a day is as much of a habit as working out in a gym for two hours a day.SustainabilityWhen building new habits, dont chase immediate results, aim for sustainability. If you can do something for 100 days in a row without fail, thats sustainability. Michael Phelps can swim four hours a day, every day. You cant. Aim for somethingYOUcan do every day.I recommend starting a couple of habits one that will be directed toward your goal, and one specifically to fuel your motivation. So, if you want to write a book, write every day. If you want to lose weight, exercise every day. If you want to graduate, study every day.Remember, the scale is irrelevant at the beginning. It may be one sentence, one pushup or half a page from a textbook. Only sustainability truly matters, and its easier to maintain if your initial discipline is tiny. Also, keep in mind that tiny is subjective. One swimming pool length is tiny for Michael Phelps and writing 1,000 words is not a problem for Stephen King. When I started developing my habits I decided on several 10-minute disciplines that might have been grueling for others, like reading a book written by a saint or studying database administration documentation. But they were small in my mind.MotivationPeople often say that motivation doesnt last. Well, neither does bathing?- ?thats why we recommend it daily.?- ?Zig ZiglarWhatever your primary discipline is, you should start also a habit of igniting and maintaining your motivation. You cannot just wait for it to appear. You need to cultivate it.The range of options is wide you can read yourpersonal mission statement, look at a vision board or visualize your success (or your process of getting to that success or both). The key is to make ita habit, not to invent the fanciest motivational tool. This article first appeared on Medium. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Engineers on the Mechanics of Designing Board Games

Engineers on the Mechanics of Designing Board Games Engineers on the Mechanics of Designing Board Games Engineers on the Mechanics of Designing Board Games.indent width-removed 96%margin-left 4%.numbd-left float-removed leftwidth-removed 4%font-weight bold.numbd-right width-removed 90%float-removed leftfont-weight boldIf the words board game bring to your mind the tried and true games of yesteryearMonopoly, Clue, Riskyou may be unaware that we are now living through a veritable board game renaissance. Thanks in part to Kickdepartureer, which has allowed board game designers to produce games without the backing of a Milton Bradley-sized corporation, and to BoardGameGeek, a thriving ansprechbar community that rates games in addition to hosting several annual conventions and awards ceremonies, and perhaps to a somewhat nostalgic yearning to get off the phone and engage with other physically present people, there are thousands of new, beautifully designed games on the market. But however pretty the box and board, it is ultimately the mechanics of a game that make it a thing worth playing. So its no surprise that a large percentage of board game designers are or have been engineers. Are they drawn to the puzzle-like nature of constructing gaming challenges for the player? Do they use the same part of the mind that solves engineering problems to solve the problems of developing an engaging game? Nine board game engineers weigh in on these questions.1. Scott Almes Tiny Epic series, Best Treehouse Ever, Martian DiceMy mechanical engineering background has had no small part in my success as a game designer, Scott Almes said. Hes a product development engineer by day and a board game designer by night, as his blog puts it. For Almes, designing a game is just like designing any other product. Both have phases of research and market, as well as prototyping and development.Join ASME and Leading Industry Experts for Offshore Wind Turbine Webinar seriesExperience with this pro cess is what can give an engineer an edge in the game business. Many designers come in thinking of their games as an art piece that cant be touched, and will be resistant to further iterations, outside input, or even customer feedback, Almes said. As a mechanical designer, I was already used to the process. But that doesnt mean the engineering process and board game development are the same. When you are designing a mechanical product, your goals can be very detailumineszenzdiode and technical, Almes said. You might need a pump that cannot weigh more than X pounds, must move at least Y gallons of water a minute, and should cost less than Z. For games, you might have some hard data pointssuch as price, game length, or player countbut fruchtwein of your goals are going to be softer. You want players to get a certain feeling, or you want to set the game in a certain fictional world, or you want the players to laugh while playing. These soft goals can not only be hard to define, but hard to test.2. Adam Wyse Masque of the Red Death, Poetry Slam, Head of MouseholdAdam Wyse was once a software engineer who worked for a mechanical and civil engineering firm and, later, an energy billing company. Then he found games.Playing my first modern board games and seeing the kinds of mechanics and experiences that games were now providing blew my mind, he said. Owing partly to my engineering background, I wanted to start getting into the innards of the games . . . and wondered if I could make one myself.Soon thats all he was doing. In addition to creating games he now works full time in logistics and development for Roxley Games in Calgary.Read more on Design Game Theory Helps Robot DesignFor Wyse, the embryonic stages of a game have little to do with anything engineering. When I first start a game design it can at times feel like an artist sitting down in front of a blank canvas, he said. It is more about exploration and creativity than I found with engineering. But once a game has taken gestalt and needs revision and refinement, the engineer in him kicks in.Being able to separate out use cases or game states and evaluate the probability of these things occurring, or being able to figure out how many of a certain card or component are required, can often be very mathy, Wyse said. Some designers will go by feel, try what seems right, test it, and see how it works. The problem is there is just not enough testing that can possibly be done.I feel that a math background is so important to making good games.Thats not to say that after the initial stages a board is just another engineered product. With most engineered items, the mechanics are the means to an end. When it comes to game design, the mechanics are the game, he said. And the ends to which a game is the means is a nebulous, subjective concept called fun. It was definitely a skill Ive had to learn (and continue to try to learn) to find the fun.3. Phil Eklund Neanderthal, Bios series, Pax seriesOf what objective merit is a board game? asks Phil Eklund. The engineering problems of building bridges, vehicles, power networks, etc. have obvious consequences to help man command the resources of nature and the problems of social living. But of what survival value or philanthropisch advancement does a board game represent? The question is an important one for Eklund, who, after working for 32 years as an aerospace engineer for Hughes Aircraft segued into fulltime gaming with his company Sierra Madre Games. Hes produced many games including a trilogy of Bios games which encompass the entire history of Earth as a habitable planet. For Eklund, gameslike all artmirror the world. Crucial to that mirroring are the rules, as important to games as they are to engineering. Games and engineering are similar because they both require a grasp of rules, Eklund said. Perhaps even more than in engineering, the users of your product will be poring over the nuances and interpretations of every word, seekin g a literal interpretation that will give them a competitive advantage.Read more on Latest Tech in Old School Toys VR and Drone Technology in a Paper AirplaneThis need to organize and record our world is Eklunds answer to his existential question. Man, who is a uniquely conceptual being, finds use for art, which I define as the recreation of reality according to the artists value judgements, he said. Obviously, board games fall under such a definition. My board games are simulations of reality according to value judgements, which I take the effort to identify in footnotes in each game.4. Tunca Zeki Berkkurt Ittihat, IhtillTunca Zeki Berkkurt is currently working on his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Istanbul Technical University. He designs games in his spare time. Ihtill, or Revolution, and Ittihat, or the Union, are strategy games that recreate events in Turkish history. But my methodology is based on engineering design rather than historical research, he said. After breaking dow n a piece of history into manageable components, he develops a mathematical model that captures the relationships that produced the historical occurrences. I always define a fundamental rule that players winning strategies will focus on, Berkkurt said. This conceptual process takes about a week. But fine tuning and end design takes almost a year. Tweaking rules, actions, come-back mechanisms and winning conditionsall of which need to be tested in playcontribute to the long gestation. Berkkurt uses analytical and numerical testing to supplement what he learns from humans at the game table.Of course, after the game has been properly calibrated, it becomes a product like any other. So when I Kickstart a board game, I find retailers and printing presses, I choose the materials that the games components will be made of, and I even check the tools and workers, he said. All this work is the manufacturing engineering process and should be taken carefully.5. Joan Wendland X-Machina, Counting Zzzzs, Evil Vendetta Pie FightJoan Wendland is the owner, operator, game designer, and Queen of Cardsas her website puts itof Blood and Cardstock Games. Shes also an engineer. Game design doesnt pay the bills, she said. For 25 years shes been an engineering consultant, which has included gigs as a systems engineer, a technical trainer, a test engineer, a requirements manager, and a data liaison. She also writes novels. When creating her quirky games, Wendland largely leaves her engineering self behind. I do know a lot of technical people will use statistics to balance a game, but I lean more heavily to reproducing the feel of the theme, she said. Her Counting Zzzzs game is so close to the actual mechanics of sleep there is a sleep doctor in Portugal that uses it to talk to children about their sleep disorders. But her engineer returns when it comes to testing and writing the rules If theres a way for the players to break the game, your product will fail. If someone cant teach themselve s to play from the instructions, the product will fail.Read more on Inspiration Sources How Elephants Use Their Tails to Chase Away MosquitoesAnd the problem-solving part of her brain works to keep gameplay well oiled. For instance, in her Pie Fight game she found that certain dice rolls could land all the pies on a single limb which would not hurt that player any more than one pie, she said. So I decided after a second pie, the third pie would be able to slide to another body part because the first two pies made that limb toogooey for the third pie to stick. This did the trick.6. Geoffrey Engelstein Space Cadets, The Fog of War, The Ares ProjectGame design, like all design, is about solving problems, Geoffrey Engelstein said. Engelstein should know hes solved a lot of problems. As a junior and senior at MIT he was president of the Strategic Gaming Society. Now he runs roter planet International, an engineering design and manufacturing firmin New Jersey, while simultaneously creatin g games. He also teaches board game design at NYU.One of the first things I talk about are the strong analogs between game design and engineering, he said. Game design is, in many ways, a type of engineering. Engineering is about dealing with constraints. And tabletop games in particular have tremendous constraintsthe physical nature of the components, shelf cost, playing time, the ability of players to comprehend and remember the rules, and moreall of these need to be considered and juggled by the designer, and you have to balance them against each other. The ability to test a game with iterations of a mathematical model can give an engineer an advantage in making board games. You can get a much quicker understanding of the behavior of your design by doing simulations, similar to finite-element modeling for structural strength, Engelstein said. But the advantages are not just limited to testing and product developmentIn product design, mechanical engineers and industrial designers bu ild affordances and signifiers into designs so that users know what to push and what to pull, and how different features may interact with each other, he said. The best products are intuitive to use. The same holds true for board games. Using iconography and other features can make it a lot simpler for players to understand what is happening, and what their options are. There are elements of game design that require a shift in the engineering mindset. The biggest eye-opener I had taking my engineering skills and applying them to game design was in writing the rules, he said.Read more on Engineers and Fun YouTube Star Goes Viral with Glitter BombEngelstein had first thought of writing rules the way he wrote code, breaking structures into small chunks and giving specific steps for each piece Well, my first rule book was completely incomprehensible to the vast majority of players, he said. A rulebook is a teaching guide, not a flow chart that should be memorized.7. Haim Shafir Piraten k apern, Speed Cups, Halli GalliGames are products. They are a special kind of product, Haim Shafir said. They are distinct from industrial products in which the functionality is the paramount issue to consider in order to make a decision on whether to buy them or not. Games are meant to fulfill personal satisfaction. Industrial products are meant to fulfill functions.Trained as a mechanical engineer at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Shafir found his own personal satisfaction in the world of play. After several years I found myself attracted by social and humanistic questions which led me to be involved in toys and games, he said. On the one hand, one may say it is far away from engineeringalmost the oppositebut I disagree. All my training as an engineer is still useful as a game inventor. For four decades now Shafir has put that training to creating games for his company Shafir Games. The skills one need to become a successful game designer depend on the type of games one is focused onbut mathematics is certainly important, he said. But above all creativity is paramount. Creativity starts with curiosity. And Shafir is curious about whats fun. I am the kind of designer that focuses on social and fun games, so I learn and research fun and the roots of fun. This is as far as one can think of from mechanical engineering but any successful creative career is always surprising, transformational, and combiningmany disciplines.8. Bruno Cathala 7 Wonders Duel, Five Tribes, KingdominoFor 18 years, Bruno Cathala created Tungsten alloys for the medical, aeronautic, and military industries. To create a new material, he always went through the same stages. As he puts it First there is a sparkling idea. This requires the design of an experimental plan for validation. During this stage, you adapt, correct, modify, cancel, and validate to reach the final answer you are looking for. Then, when you have exactly what you want, you have to write the process with very precise and simple sentences so that anybody on the production line can understand all the instructions. The development of a game follows exactly the same path, he said. So, today, Im doing the same job. Its only the field which is different.Read more on Designing Learning Environments Rats Play VR Game to Explain How Human Brain Works Same job or not, Cathalas path has produced some very popular games. 7 Wonders Duel is owned by over 60 thousand registered users at BoardGameGeek and is ranked 14th most popular game. Do Cathalas sparkling board game ideas come from the same place that his engineering ideas come from? Well, its quite impossible for me to know if ideas for games or products come from the same place, he said. Because I just dont know where my ideas come from, never mind if its game ideas, or metallurgical development ideas in my former job, or music ideas (Im trying to play guitar). But he does know when he gets his ideas. Ideas come when Im not focused on searching for ideasa nd maybe even what theyre made ofTheyre generated by a lot of different influences Papers, movies, and discussions. But its always unconscious. That means that my brain has digested a lot of different data and, at one point, generates something which seems unique to me, but is for sure the result of this digestion. Then the works begins to try to know if this idea deserves some development or not.Engineers hoping to develop any board game ideas of their ownwherever they come fromcan check out the Board Game Design Lab. Joining the Army - Quality of Life Considerations

Joining the Army - Quality of Life ConsiderationsJoining the Army - Quality of Life ConsiderationsThe Army has made great strides in their quality of life programs (barracks, family housing, on-base shopping and services, and recreation) since 9/11. While progress is occuring, there are many bases all over the world to update. Consider This One thing that is smart to consider before joining the military (Army specifically) is to do your research as to what job you want. Pick a job that you are interested in and then research. You have to research everything about it. For instance, if you want to be an Army Ranger, you should be learning about that job, the training that is required, fitness tests, schools you need to attend prior, and where you will be living. For instance, if you want to be a Ranger, you will be attending Basic Military Training at Fort Benning, GA. All of your follow on training will also be located there. Advanced Individual Training, Airborne School, Ranger Prep Course, and Ranger Assessment and Selection. You will be living in Georgia for all of this training. However, after training, you could be stationed in the 75 Ranger Regiment and live either there in Georgia or Washington State. So now you know where you could be living. Do more research - what is the base like? Is the base updated? In a nice city and surrounding area? All of these questions can be answered prior to joining and if you care about the quality of life you will have at work and recreationally, you should learn this information. binnensee this list of bases for up to date information. While Soldiers at several bases are still living in barracks which were built during World War II and the Korean War, the Army is working on building new barracks buildings. The new barracks, called 1 1, provide each soldier with a private bedroom. Two junior enlisted Soldiers share a common kitchenette and bath in a two-bedroom suite, hence the 11 label. Senior enlisted Soldiers have a private suite including a separate furnished living room, under the new design. All Soldiers Army-wide are expected to be housed in the new barracks design by the year 2012. Dozens of projects for new 11 barracks and renovation of existing barracks, exceeding $1 billion, are currently in design or under construction. Unmarried Soldiers in the rank of E-6 and above are usually allowed to live off base, and receive a monetary housing allowance, called BAH. At some bases, this privilege is extended to those in the rank of E-5. Like the other services, the Army is aggressively converting existing on-base family housing to military privatized housing. Under this concept, civilian companies are encouraged to construct, maintain, and manage military-only housing complexes on and close to military bases. The Army program is called Residential Community Initiative. Currently, the Army RCI program is comprised of 45 installations (combined into 35 projects) over 88,000 homes - 99% of A rmys family housing inventory in the U.S. To date, 35 installations (77,000 homes) have been privatized, 10 more (11,000 homes) are in solicitation or under development. At most bases, married Soldiers are given a choice of living in family housing, or living off base at a place of their choosing, with a monthly housing allowance. Soldiers who are authorized to live off base at government expense, and those who live in family housing receive a monthly food allowance, called BAS. Those who live in the barracks do not normally receive this allowance, but eat their meals for free in the on-base dining facilities (chow halls). The food is also improving in the past decade as well. Army Dining Facilities The Army has revamped the way is delivers meals to the soldiers. Similar to the way colleges and universities across the country have managed to meet the needs of thousands of students and faculty, the Army has determined the soldiers could benefit from a similar model. Not only c afeteria style, but kiosks, private food vendors can also be part of the equation. Similarly, military chow halls are trying to curb obesity in the ranks by going with fresh foods primarily, frying foods less, and fewer processed meats, sweets, and sodas. Getting better also means getting healthier. Army MWR - Check into the base MWR program and find as many things out about the fun things to do in and outside of the Army Garrison. From group trips, equipment rentals, great deals on travel, family programs and more, Army MWR can definitely put the quality of life back into your life. Make the Most of Annual Employee Performance Reviews

Make the Most of Annual Employee Performance ReviewsMake the Most of Annual Employee Performance ReviewsThere are three key things to remember about annual wertmiger zuwachs reviews They are a waste of time. They are required by many companies. They should contain no surprises. Why Annual Performance Reviews Are Considered a Waste of Time Many HR professionals and managers believe that annual performance reviews are a waste of time. They are often too infrequent and too formal to be of any value for the person being reviewed. However, they are something managers feel they have to do or something they are required to do. If you pick up a copy of the book Why Annual Performance Reviews Are A Waste Of Time, however, you will find specific suggestions on how to improve annual performance reviews so they benefit the employee and the team. Why Annual Reviews Are Usually Required Most companies require an annual performance review to be completed for every employee. The Human Resource s department provides a standard form and a required grading scale. Every manager dutifully fills out the same form, or has the employee fill it out, then spends as little time as possible discussing the results. Whatever discussion does take place is often combative, because the employee knows that this one document will determine the amount of their raise for the upcoming year. Because you cant escape doing an annual performance review, its best to make them as useful as possible and when meeting with the employee to try to get value out of theoverall evaluation of their performanceby comparing their work to others on the team, or in the department. The reason companies require annual performance reviews is to have a method for gauging how to distribute annual raises. If each employee is given a grade, raises can be given based on where the employee fits into the grading system. Unfortunately, the result is that when you do an annual performance review, the only thing the employee listens to is their grade. How to Make Annual Performance Reviews Beneficial for Employees Using employee grades to appropriate raises is fundamentally flawed. It doesnt equate raises to how an employee helped the company achieve its goals. However, if you must use the system, use it to motivate your group to produce at optimum levels. Do a performance review for each employee each quarter and share the results with them. This way, at the end of the year, youre merely pulling togetherthree quarterly reviews and adding them to the employees fourth quarter review. Make sure the employee understands that your method is just a quarterly review so they can concentrate on the gist of their annual review when the time comes, rather than make them worry about their grade. When their fourth-quarter reviewis complete, you and the employee should have a clear understanding of their performance and, more importantly, their goals for the coming review period. You should both be able to iden tify the same appropriate grade based on your ongoing communication. If there is a difference of opinion, its usually because the employee doesnt understand how their performance compares to others in the group. If the employee selects a grade higher than you select, make sure you clarify why. At the end of this year-long process, you will have accomplished the following Given the employee feedback on how their performance is helping the group achieve its goals.Clarified for them how their performance compares to others in the group.Motivated them to continue to improve their performance.Selected with them the appropriate grade from the company grading list.Completed the annual review that is required.
